Spiritual gifts (charismata) are supernatural abilities given by the Holy Spirit for the common good of the church. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul provides essential teaching on these gifts.

The Source of Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4-6)

"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work."

All gifts come from the Triune God. The diversity of gifts reflects unity in the Godhead.

The Nine Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:7-11)

Revelation Gifts (Knowing)

1. Word of Wisdom Supernatural insight for applying truth to specific situations

2. Word of Knowledge Divine revelation of facts unknown to the natural mind

3. Discerning of Spirits Ability to distinguish between spirits—whether divine, human, or demonic

Power Gifts (Doing)

4. Faith Special faith for specific situations, beyond ordinary saving faith

5. Gifts of Healings Supernatural ability to bring physical healing

6. Working of Miracles Power to perform supernatural acts that override natural laws

Vocal Gifts (Speaking)

7. Prophecy Speaking forth a message from God for edification, encouragement, and comfort

8. Tongues Speaking in a language unknown to the speaker, given by the Spirit

9. Interpretation of Tongues Supernatural ability to interpret a message given in tongues

Key Principles

For the Common Good (v. 7)

"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good."

Gifts are not for personal benefit but for building up the church.

Distributed by the Spirit (v. 11)

"All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines."

The Spirit sovereignly decides who receives which gifts.

All Are Needed (vv. 12-27)

Paul uses the body metaphor to show that:

  • Every member is important
  • No one should think they're not needed
  • No one should think they don't need others
  • The diverse parts work together as one

Earnestly Desire (v. 31)

"Now eagerly desire the greater gifts."

While the Spirit distributes gifts, we are encouraged to earnestly desire them, especially those that build up the church.

Operating in the Gifts

With Love (Chapter 13)

Paul follows his teaching on gifts with the "love chapter." Gifts without love are worthless.

With Order (Chapter 14)

Gifts should be exercised in an orderly manner that builds up the church.

With Discernment

Test everything against Scripture and submit to spiritual leadership.

Are These Gifts for Today?

Pentecostals believe that all spiritual gifts remain active today because:

  1. There is no Scripture indicating the gifts have ceased
  2. The church still needs spiritual empowerment
  3. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever
  4. The "last days" spoken of in Acts 2 continue until Christ returns

Discovering Your Gifts

  1. Pray: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal and activate your gifts
  2. Study: Learn what Scripture teaches about each gift
  3. Serve: Discover gifts through active service
  4. Seek feedback: Others often recognize gifts in us
  5. Step out: Exercise faith by attempting to operate in gifts

The spiritual gifts are given to build up the body of Christ. May we earnestly desire them and use them in love for God's glory!
