Divine healing is one of the four cardinal doctrines of classical Pentecostalism. Pentecostals believe that physical healing is provided in the atonement of Christ and remains available to believers today.

The Biblical Basis

Healing in the Atonement

"He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed." — 1 Peter 2:24

Isaiah 53:4-5 prophesied that the Messiah would bear our sicknesses:

"Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering... and by his wounds we are healed."

Jesus' Healing Ministry

Jesus healed the sick throughout His earthly ministry, demonstrating God's will to heal:

  • He healed all who came to Him (Matthew 8:16)
  • He commissioned His disciples to heal (Matthew 10:8)
  • Healing was a sign of the Kingdom of God (Luke 10:9)

Healing in the Early Church

The apostles continued Christ's healing ministry:

  • Peter and John healed the lame man (Acts 3)
  • Extraordinary miracles through Paul (Acts 19:11-12)
  • James instructs the church on healing prayer (James 5:14-16)

The Pentecostal Understanding

Part of Complete Salvation

Pentecostals view salvation holistically—Christ came to save the whole person: spirit, soul, and body.

Available Today

Jesus Christ is "the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8). What He did then, He can do now.

Not Automatic

While healing is provided, receiving it requires faith and often involves prayer, laying on of hands, or anointing with oil.

Practical Guidance

Seeking Healing

  1. Confess and repent: James connects healing with confessing sins (James 5:16)
  2. Build your faith: Faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17)
  3. Request prayer: Call for the elders to pray and anoint with oil (James 5:14)
  4. Believe and receive: Receive healing by faith, trusting God's promise
  5. Give thanks: Praise God for His healing power

When Healing Doesn't Come Immediately

  • Continue to trust God's goodness
  • Persist in prayer
  • Use medical care as a gift from God
  • Focus on eternal perspective
  • Remember that Paul's "thorn" wasn't removed, but grace was sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9)

A Balanced View

Pentecostals affirm divine healing while acknowledging:

  • God is sovereign and His ways are higher than ours
  • Medical care is not a lack of faith
  • Ultimate healing awaits the resurrection
  • The focus should remain on Christ, not just on receiving healing

Divine healing is a wonderful gift and a present reality for believers. At the same time, we hold it with open hands, trusting the God who heals more than the healing itself.
